Should I pursue a design degree or computer science to work in UX design?

Hi, I’m finishing my 3rd year at university and recently switched majors to computer science. Consistently in academic experience, the technical/ engineering classes don’t seem to be my strong suit. I started as an engineering major, struggled somewhat & eventually concluded that UX design is a career I actually want, so computer science would be good for a technical background.

I have always been good at creative/ visually artistic pursuits & writing, so I would commit to a major called Digital Arts & Sciences (a mix of animation & game design). It’s the closest thing to UX design/ HCI that my large state school offers. Changing to the design major would delay graduation by at least a year & waste time, possibly lowering job prospects. But it would actually help me in UX design (to an extent). Seems like a CS degree is unnecessary for a UX design career.

So please, I’d appreciate anyone’s opinion. Can you share ANY experiences you’ve had in the industry? Since I want to work in UX design, should I just pursue what I’m good at if I am not doing well in CS?

Get an HCi or Interaction design degree.

I am a graduating senior this year of such a program

A CS degree will only loosely translate to UX design. You’d be better off majoring in graphic design than CS for UX
